One of the simplest things to do is remove your name from the pre-approved credit card mailing list. It will also reduce alot of that junk mail you get as well. Simply go HERE and electronically opt out for 5 years.

You can also use the Federal Credit Reporting Act to dispute items that you feel may be misleading, inaccurate, obsolete, outdated or unverifiable.

If you can find a loved one to add you to their credit card as an authorized user, this is an excellent way to build credit. It will add their credit history from that credit card account, onto your credit history. BEWARE though: if that loved one is ever delinquent on this account, this will also affect your credit history.

How can I get a checking account when I am listed in Chex Systems?
Looking into this. Will have an answer posted when I can find some banks that do not use ChexSystems to open new accounts. HOWEVER, in the meantime the banner just below has an excellent option. Use it like a checking account, and as bonus the card reports to the credit agencies too.
